Modal vs RunPod

Modal and RunPod both let teams run GPU workloads in the cloud, but they expose them differently. Modal is a serverless platform with a Python-first SDK: functions decorated with @app.function get auto-scaled containers, GPUs are attached on demand, and there are no servers to manage. RunPod offers both serverless GPU endpoints and direct GPU rental (pods you SSH into and configure yourself), giving lower-level control alongside the managed option.

If the workload fits a deploy-a-Python-function shape (inference, batch jobs, scheduled tasks), Modal removes most of the infrastructure work. If the workload needs custom environments, long-running training jobs, or the cheapest per-hour GPU rates with hands-on control, RunPod's pod model is closer to traditional cloud GPU rental and tends to cost less for sustained use. Modal trades raw cost for developer ergonomics. RunPod trades ergonomics for flexibility and price. Teams often use both: Modal for production inference endpoints, RunPod for training and experimentation.
